About the Region
The Kentucky Crossroad's region includes eight counties: Boyle, Green, LaRue, Marion, Mercer, Nelson, Taylor and Washington. These counties were selected for their historic resources, past history of regional efforts, and international appeal for their role in the upcoming 2008-2010 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration.
About RHDI
- Two regions have been selected nationally to participate in this three-year pilot program focused on preservation-based economic development. Focus areas include cultural heritage tourism, downtown revitalization and sustainable local business development, preservation and development of historic buildings, housing and neighborhood revitalization, capacity building, resource development, and rural landscape preservation and sustainability, among other efforts.
- This program opportunity is made possible by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to enable rural communities to grow while sustaining the heritage that makes them unique. In addition to resources provided through National Trust programs and services that will go toward the project, funds will be provided for consulting services and a staff person based in Kentucky and dedicated to the project for the three-year period.
Program Partners
Leadership
- The program's design and delivery is planned in cooperation with the regional steering committee, which is comprised of key stakeholders and representatives from each participating county. Steering committee members are required to attend quarterly meetings, assist with project implementation, and perform other project-specific duties during the course of the grant.
- A State and Federal Advisory Committee assists the regional steering committee with implementation of the grant's key goals. This committee, which is comprised of state and federal leadership from agriculture, tourism, economic development, arts and cultural organizations, State Parks, and the State Main Street program, brings together the best minds in state and federal government to help solve problems and offer creative solutions for the region. This group will provide information and assistance and pool resources for the Regional Rural Heritage Steering Committee regarding governmental programs, incentives, and technical assistance.
