This summer, an exciting event is being planned at Pine Mountain Settlement School (PMSS) [External Link - You are now leaving the .gov domain. ], a national historic landmark in Harlan County, which - in conjunction with the Heritage Council - has hosted Pine Mountain School for Practical Historic Preservation programs since 2002. Pine Mountain Settlement School wood window preservation workshopPTN has announced a National Window Preservation Summit July 26-28 at PMSS, which will highlight the research of an independent, five-person group of PTN members - dubbed the National Window Preservation Collaborative - whose goal is to develop standards for window restoration, for use by architects, contractors and others.

During the summit, collaborative members will restore historic windows on site. Prior to this, an independent organization will test windows for U-value and air infiltration, and this window testing method will also be standardized for efficiency. After the windows are restored the windows will be tested again using this new methodology. This process will show the increased energy savings value of the restored windows and provide a valid comparison with those of replacement windows. Both the window restoration and energy testing standards will be unveiled at Pine Mountain. Learn more about this and other 2011 Kentucky Heritage Council Preservation Skills Workshops.
